Is there any way to stop or discontinue this process? I don't want all these giant files on my computer, plus iTunes has been downloading for about 16 hours which is slowing my computer down to almost nothing. I've checked all dropdowns in iTunes, visited apple support and googled my question, but still haven't found any directions on this question.
Thanks in advance for any help! I think I answered my own dumb question. Right click and choose "Settings" or alternatively, click on the gear icon next to the podcast title on the episode list on the right.
In the Podcast Settings dialog, under the " Settings for:" dropdown, select "Podcasts Defaults" this would apply your changes to all podcasts. In the "When new episodes are available:" dropdown, select "Do nothing" the default option being "Download the most recent one".

I deleted my existing itunes library and created a new library. Who owns this outage? If you ask me, automatic updating of the podcasts is not at all necessary. The chances that you will watch all the episodes right when they are available are 1 in Moreover, many users who are on a limited bandwidth would just hate it when iTunes drains their bandwidth in the background when all they had in mind was to listen to music in the library.
To control the update frequency of an individual podcast on iTunes open the Podcasts tab from iTunes library.
Now select the podcast you would to change the settings for. As soon as you choose a podcast you will see that the Subscribe button in the toolbar below will change to Unsubscribe. When you see the Unsubscribe button, click on the Settings button right next to it.
A podcast settings window will open up and you can configure the podcast settings here.
